Oily skin still needs moisturiser. Here is why

The most common mistake with oily skin, and the texture that fixes it without adding shine.

If your face is shiny by lunchtime, adding a moisturiser sounds like the last thing you should do. It is usually the thing that finally helps.

The reasoning takes one minute to understand and saves years of fighting the wrong battle.

What actually happens when you skip it

A skin barrier that is repeatedly stripped loses water faster and tends to get irritated. Irritated skin feels tight, flakes, and reacts to things it used to tolerate.

So a routine built on stripping and skipping often makes the day to day worse rather than better. People then conclude their skin is simply very difficult, when a good part of it is a reaction to how they are treating it.

The texture is the whole decision

You do not need a special product for oily skin, you need a lighter one. A gel or a thin lotion does the same job as a heavy cream: hold water in so the barrier can work.

Look for water based, oil free, and a texture that disappears in under a minute. Anything that leaves a film will show as shine by mid morning, and then you will stop using it, which puts you back at the start.

When to apply it

On slightly damp skin, within about three minutes of washing. That timing does more for the result than which product you picked.

Morning and night. In the morning it goes under sunscreen, so give it a minute to absorb first.

How long before you can judge

Three weeks. Oil production does not change overnight, and the first week can feel like a mistake.

If after three weeks you are still shining by midday, the moisturiser is not the problem. Look at how often and how harshly you are washing instead.

In short

Lighter texture, damp skin, twice a day, three weeks. Skipping moisturiser to fight oil is the mistake, not the solution.
